Canterbury West | Case Study

Client: Osborne Rail
Location: Canterbury West, South London
On behalf of: Network Rail
Value: £541,000

The Project

Thousands of passengers travel through Canterbury West train station on a day to day basis, making it important for the station to be easily accessible for everyone as a way of supporting the Access for All Scheme.

WEC Rail manufactured and installed a brand new footbridge and two lifts to increase the ease of access for passengers such as the disabled and the elderly, and for those travelling with children or carrying heavy or awkward luggage.

The Outcome

After being lifted into place by a crane in Winter 2010, passengers (especially those with reduced mobility) can now benefit from the footbridge and connecting automatic lifts. Since the installation, the number of passengers using the station has increased dramatically as it is now much more accessible for all.

Vince Lucas, Service Delivery Director Southeastern, said: "Now passengers will be able to have a station that matches its needs and allow better access for all passengers."

WEC Rail has been designing, manufacturing and installing new footbridges since 2005. Many of our footbridges include features such as lowered handrails, ramps and automatic lifts with audible tones to support the Access for All Scheme.

WEC Rail is an RISQS certified (formerly known as Achilles Link-up) supplier and a leading force in providing innovative design, fabrication and installation services to the rail industry.
